Employees are members of the Employees Retirement System, which makes them eligible for retirement, disability, and death benefits. (For additional information, please refer to the Employees Retirement System (www.ers.state.tx.us).
A comprehensive group health and life insurance program is available to employees. Most new employees are eligible for health insurance coverage on the first day of the month after their 60th day of employment. Additional coverage is available for employees and dependents for a reasonable additional charge. (For additional information, please refer to the Employees Retirement System (www.ers.state.tx.us).
Typically, employees receive between 12 and 15 days of holiday leave (State Auditor website) each year as set by the state legislature.
Employees accrue annual leave based on their length of state service. New state employees are eligible to take annual leave after they have been employed by the state for six months.
Employees accrue sick leave each month, and it may be used when the employee or an immediate family member is ill or for medical appointments. Employees who have exhausted all of their own leave may be eligible for paid leave from the agency’s Sick Leave Pool, or Extended Sick Leave may be granted.
Other leave is available to eligible employees, including emergency leave, family and medical leave (Department of Labor website), military leave, parental leave, parent-teacher conference leave and recognition leave.
Eligible employees receive additional pay each month based on their years of state service.
Employees may contribute pre-tax dollars to either or both the Tex$aver 401(k) or 457 deferred compensation programs. (For additional information, please refer to the Employees Retirement System (www.ers.state.tx.us).
