Living in a nursing facility can sometimes make persons feel like they’re facing a dead end or a brick wall. Diana Palacios, a self-described loner, had been living in one for about a year and wanted nothing more than to get out.

“Nursing homes are so noisy. You have people walking into your room all the time. I didn’t have any privacy whatsoever. It was great having your meals served to you but that was about it. I wanted my own space.”

One day a staff member at the nursing facility told her to call Coastal Bend Center for Independent Living to see if there was anything they could do to help her. She called. A few months later CBCIL helped Diana qualify for TDHCA’s HOME Tenant Based Rental Assistance Voucher and, just like that, she had her own apartment.

“I love having my own space. I like turning on my TV and hearing it without all the noise going on. I’m so glad to be here.”

Apart from the peace and quiet, Diana now has hope and other reasons to like living on her own.

“I love looking out my window. It’s so pretty outside. There was a window at the nursing home but it looked out back…at a brick wall.”
