Beautiful New House
Texas is unlike anywhere else in the world; from its iconic western themes, sprawling landscapes, and, of course, its generous spirit. And this generous spirit became a reality for five families in Driscoll who received brand new homes thanks to the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs ("TDHCA"), the City of Driscoll, and GrantWorks, Inc. These families had their substandard homes demolished and replaced with brand new homes using funds from TDHCA.
Driscoll accessed TDHCA's HOME Homeowner Rehabilitation Assistance Program funds to assist low income homeowners with repairs to bring their homes into compliance with local codes and construction specifications or to replace homes with a new house when repair costs are greater than the allowable limits for repairs. The homes include modern amenities like central air and new appliances.
One of the grant recipients, Maria R., had leaks in her plumbing that resulted in rotting floorboards. The exterior siding of her house had chipping paint, buckling, and holes. She applied for the grant in January 2013 and was approved for the funds. Before long, Mayor John A. Aguilar handed over the keys to Maria's newly constructed three bedroom and two bathroom home. "Thank you HOME Program, City, and Mayor for the beautiful new house," Maria said.
The City of Driscoll is happy to be able to help out its residents who are in need, and is thankful for TDHCA and GrantWorks, Inc. who have made it all possible. Though it's safe to say Maria and the four other families are even more thankful.
