TDHCA Staff Members Roll Up Their Sleeves
(AUSTIN-5/20/03) TDHCA
staff members arrived early at work on May 20, 2003 especially eager
to roll up their sleeves; not just to work hard, but to donate blood.
The first ever TDHCA Blood Drive was held that day. From 9:00 AM to
4:00 PM, 33 staff members boarded The Blood and Tissue Center of Central
Texas bus and braved the needle to help keep the central Texas blood
flowing. Over 25 pints of blood were donated and will help save the
lives of people in the 10 counties and 30 hospitals of Blood and Tissue
Center’s service area.
The
blood drive was coordinated by TDHCA staff member Teresa Day (at left).
Teresa is not only a Legal Assistant in the Legal Services Division,
but is also a State Certified EMT who volunteers for the Burnett County
EMS, and she knows firsthand the importance of donating blood. She
is also keenly aware of the critical blood shortage in the area, which
is why she coordinated the drive. “I was at a meeting for a proposed
Corporate First Responder Organization a few weeks ago when a conversation
turned to the blood shortage. It wasn’t long before I decided
to organize a blood drive at TDHCA. I passed the idea by Ms. Carrington
and she thought it was a great idea.”
“Our staff is always eager to help the community in any way it can and the blood drive was just one more way of doing just that,” said Edwina Carrington, TDHCA Executive Director. “I commend Teresa for putting the blood drive together and the donors who bravely went under the needle.”
